Why is online Reputation management important?

I always laugh at guys who ask me to take their links down. Ever heard of free speech?

Large percentage of Society is conservative. Do wander sometimes in asia ( esp india). See how people treat each other based on their reputation. e.g. Divorced female in india is either looked down with either sympathy or she's treated like (let me not use that word). So imagine people with such social structural needs are moving into online demanding the same sort of things from others.Same setup is now moving into online scene. I have seen many people talking about products and the brands the same way and using or ignoring them.
