Reputable Plastic Molding Company Anyone?

Hey BHW!

I'm wondering if anyone has a Injection Molding company that they can recommend or have used in the past. This is a small plastic part, about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide and quite a simple design.
I'm looking for a cheap producer, but one that will have decent quality control, and can communicate well. I'm also not looking to get a TON of units at this point. This will be more a test run for a prototype product I have though of.

Also do you guys know what program people would typically make prototype designs in? photoshop, illustrator,...?

Any help in this general area would be great too!

You probably would want to develop renderings in Solidworks, or Autodesk Inventor, or something of that nature. Maybe some other folks would jump in.

It is funny that this question has been asked, because I am also on the lookout for a company that can do molding, and also handle polyurethane resin molds for automotive applications.
 
Alright I'll send a PM right now.

I think I may be looking at vacuum molding instead due to the high initial costs of IM.

What do you guys think
?
 
i used to use "tap plastics" in mountain view california. they made some pretty crazy stuff for me - they fabricate right in the shop.
 
Solid works and Autodesk inventor are popular softwares.

There is also Top Solid, CATIA, IDEA etc.

This isn't too advanced of a design.
How big were your orders and what were pricing per unit?

Are those programs pretty easy to learn? This is a semi-simple design.

Any particular reason that you'd recomend them? There's alot of companies out there but I'd like to hear about the ones that people have worked with and have had good experiences with!
 
Although I did not actually go through with the purchase, I did consult with them about possibly manufacturing a supply of polyurethane pieces for use as engine mounts for a specific automotive application. Good folks.

Either way, GL with your search.

Sorry, I did receive your PM, I just am unable to write back to you because of the 15 post minimum limitation on authoring private messages.

Because of the quantity of the product you are trying to produce, I suggest you check out any rapid prototyping company. One good suggestion is protomold, you should google them.

Typically you will want to use rapid prototyping to gauge initial demand for your product or for low quantity production runs (>1000 units). This is because injection molding requires expensive steel tooling to be fabricated to mold the plastic. Until you hit the 3k-10k unit order threshold, it is usually cost prohibitive despite the fact that your parts will cost nearly nothing per unit.
