    Good evening, everyone.

I'm sure you're all sick to death of these type of threads, but I'm making one anyway. For my part, this will be a way of tracking and reviewing my progress over time. More importantly, I'm hoping public exposure will help keep me more accountable.

I've been lurking and reading BHW for about a year or so now, and last month I started taking serious action to make IM a significant part of my life and income. Ultimately, I'd like to do this full-time. I do some freelance designing on the side, but my main income source is an unfortunately terrible Customer Service gig. I have come to the conclusion that my education level and work experience is not enough to land a position that will pay what I need to build a better life, so I must create my own.

I started slowly in the third week of January, using some of the tumblr techniques shown in other threads (search them them, there are plenty). Saturday I broke 2000 followers on the more popular of the blogs. I'm somewhere around week four. All in all, I'm fairly satisfied with it. I brought in about $7.00 last month with adsense - which isn't bad given that I didn't start until halfway through the month. I'm hoping to break $20 this month, maybe even $30 if it keeps growing steadily. I've taken a dip since the Tumblr update though, so we'll see.

I currently have two tumblrs running, with plans to start more in the near future.

(To people whouse Tumblr this way - when you make multiple blogs, do you try for different niches, or just make two or three in the same niche so you can recycle images?)

The primary reason for making this thread today however, is that I have begun a second project of a slightly larger scope. I just launched an affiliate site, with the intention of combining both on and offline traffic sources for sales. I don't know nearly enough about SEO to try to capture web traffic, but I'm playing with a couple methods to actively reach out to the target audience rather than passively hope for traffic via keyword searches and the like. One day, I'll have to learn this too, but for now I'll leave it be.

I've got about $40 invested so far in purchasing hosting, a domain name, etc. The site was finally completed and polished up tonight. The traffic campaign will begin tomorrow.

    For now, today's tumblr stats:

    Followers: 2255
    Adsense revenue today: $0.30

    Revenue this month: $6.50
    Revenue to last month: $7.48

Once the traffic campaign is launched for the affiliate site, I'll start posting stats on that. Similarly, I need to try to scale up the tumblr aspects and try to turn it into something steadier.

For now, it's bed time. Another day done. Thanks for reading. Hope you stick around.

    Hey there Jackson,

I wish you the best of luck in your journey!

In regards to your question about the Tumblr blogs, back when I did Tumblr I created 4-5 blogs on the same niche, and I had a folder of roughly 5,000 images in that niche.
My posting was automated, but what happened was that photos were randomly chosen to post on each of those blogs (and no photo would be posted more than once until all 5,000 were posted, and the cycle would start over again).

Keep working on that affiliate site too - as long as you keep working on it, keep ranking / backlinking, and keep improving and optimizing whatever bits need to be fixed, you'll get there :)

    Best,
    - Metra

Good luck man, i wish you the best in your journey!

You gotta need it bad enough to make this happen, just a motivational situation. Think about how will you see yourself in a year without doing anything/creating your business and how you see yourself after fully commiting to it, you won't have any time to procrastinate.

    Good luck!

That sounds ridiculously handy. How did you manage to set that up, if you don't mind my asking?

Read the SEO threads, the sooner you start the easier it will become. You don't have to become an expert but just make sure you do the basics.

    Good Luck

Spend $12 and purchase Tumblr Autobot - it will change your game completely. I'm not affiliated with the author, but his product is fantastic. I'm averaging ~100 more followers a day in my niche after using his product (effectively doubling my daily growth). I'm in a non-adult market and also advertising with Adsense.

Long term IM income... hmmm... I'd keep my daytime job for as long as I am not 150% sure that I will never come back to it again.

Took the day off from work. I needed a break, and I figured I could use some time to concentrate on IM. I got some off-line marketing material designed, and wrote up some content for the affiliate site as well. I also managed to lose about an hour on tumblr, reblogging and saving new material for later. Unfortunately, I also found out that fatboy's TumblrQueueAdder isn't working for me now. I have until Saturday before my queue runs dry. I'll have to look for a new solution.

I spent some time trying to find a way around craigslist's phone verification requirements, but I eventually caved and gave them the number of one of my cells. Hopefully that won't come back to bite me horribly.

I've also managed to streamline my work space some, and I've found a couple tools that I'm really loving:

Evernote has become my central hub for keeping notes and ideas jotted down. Before, I actually had about a thousand notepad files in folders in my computer like post-its. The chrome plug-ins have made it extremely easy to snag things from web pages. I'm now making it a point to back up any BHW thread I really like, as I've had amazing things disappear into the VIP section right after I discovered them. Never again! With the ability to have notebooks within notebooks, I've been keeping my IM projects and other things all organized in one place, and it automatically syncs between my phone and desktop.

DoIT if anyone is familiar with the David Allen GTD setup, this will be pretty easy to grasp. It's essentially a glorified checklist-maker, but it's a fantastic task management tool. Simple inbox that allows you to tag specific tasks under individual projects, by context (work, home, phone, errands, etc), set due dates, set priorities, and schedule the tasks to be accomplished by a specific date (or pop up again on a daily/weekly/monthly/etc basis). It all sounds more complicated than it is. I've got everything on my plate currently parked and accessible. As with evernote, I've got it on desktop (through their web-app) and synced with my phone. First month of pro is free as well.

StayFocusd is another fantastic chrome extension that lets you blacklist certain sites (facebook, youtube, whatever) where you find yourself wasting a lot of time. You can set a specific amount of time you're allowed to spend on blacklisted sites per day (I currently give myself 20 minutes) before it blocks the page and redirects you to a page that simply reads "Shouldn't you be working?" Extremely handy if for no other reason than to prevent the "where did the last hour go?" issue.

    Finally, today's tumblr stats:

    Followers: 2491
    Adsense revenue today: $1.02
    Adsense revenue today: $0.48
    Revenue this month: $8.34
    Revenue to last month: $7.48

The last couple days on tumblr have been weird. I'm growing pretty steadily, but the clicks don't seem to be going nearly as well as I feel like they should. Any advice from more successful tumblr players out there?

Also, is there a way to push adsense towards displaying ads more relevant to my actual niche? If you were reblogging women's shoes, the ads should not be for jobs as a trucker.

    Alright. Back to work.

Been a few days since my last post. The weekend saw me busier than I intended with non-IM stuff, but what can you do?

The affiliate site was launched, some flyers were made and things posted. I've gotten a handful of traffic so far, but no conversions yet. I'm going to wait a bit, redouble my efforts in traffic generation and see if it gets any solid bites. If not, then I'll make some adjustments to my landing page and try again.

Tumblr is where I'm seeing the most progress. After doing some forum research (and looking over the helpful replies here) I added a few new toys to my pile. I bought Tumblr Autobot. Because of my niche, I haven't gotten the most use out of the scraper / reblogger, but it is definitely a solid uploader, and before I step away from the computer for any length of time I set it to go about following people in my niche with a nice long wait between follows to keep it natural looking. That alone made it worth the $12, I think. Especially after the free bots I had been using stopped working.

I also found a good scraper / image downloader and now my content concerns are pretty much over forever. I scraped three or four sites dry in my niche and I've got something like 15000 images now. I'm in the process now of making them into nice, neat 300 image folders and weeding out anything irrelevant. After that, I'll never really need to fool with them again, just move onto a new folder each week or so for each site and repeat.

After some advice from Metra on his thread, I decided to reevaluate my ads. Ive changed the layouts on my tumblrs (carefully saving the old layouts into text files), and tried swapping the ads for text ads. I managed to get all this done tonight, so we'll see if that leads to an increase in clicks in the future.

I also added another tumblr, bringing my total to 3 blogs for the moment. Im proceding cautiously so far, trying to fly under the radar insofar as such a thing is possible. I need to take a look at getting proxies or something so I can make a handful more without fear of endangering my already functional blogs. That said, the latest tumblr was launched last night and already has 60 followers, so that much is working out nicely.

    Finally, today's Tumblr Stats

    Followers: 3001(!)
    Adsense Revenue Today:$1.51
    Adsense Revenue Yesterday: $0.60
    Revenue This Month: $13.49
    Revenue Last Month: $7.48

So. I'm not going to be rich any time soon, but with luck I will figure out how to get a lot more traffic converting into adsense revenue and really do something with it. At some point along the way, I need to decide how to parlay this into a more lucrative revenue stream. I feel like I read someone on the forums say their tumblrs were bringing in a couple hundred dollars a day from adsense or some such, but I feel like that's entirely too risky - even if I could get that kind of clicking power.

    Thoughts?

I'll update again in a few days. 'Night.
