My Instagram feed keeps showing the same types of content over and over — do you think the algorithm is getting too repetitive too?

It's not necessarily an algorithm error, but rather Instagram is optimizing based on your behavior. If you frequently interact with a particular type of content, the system will continue to suggest similar content. To change things up, actively engage with other topics to adjust your feed.

2026 algorithm prioritizes retention over variety, showing familiar content that previously held your attention while limiting back-to-back posts from one creator. This creates loops of similar posts, especially if your activity (likes, pauses) reinforces certain topics.
Try Reset suggested content: Profile > Menu > What You See > Content Preferences > Reset Content Suggestions

I think that the smart feed has simply been optimized and shows what you've watched most often. I think that's the reason.

Building on the idea of resetting content suggestions, I found that combining this with a 2-week engagement detox from familiar topics can drastically refresh the feed. By avoiding likes and comments on repetitive content and instead engaging with diverse posts, I was able to break the loop of similar suggestions and increase the variety of my feed by 35% in just 14 days. Additionally, using the "Not Interested" feature on at least 5 posts per day can also help the algorithm learn to suggest new content.

happens to me too and it's annoying as hell. what i do tho is close the app and take a break from doom scrolling, when i go back it's usually fixed

The home page is optimized to show you certain content in the case you are constantly viewing similar posts. There is an option to reset the the explore page in the settings aswell.

yes right, once you engage with a specific format or niche, it keeps feeding you similar content because it’s optimizing for retention, not variety. from a growth perspective, it makes sense: repetitive patterns increase watch time and interaction probability. But as a user, it can definitely feel like the feed becomes narrower and less inspiring over time

It’s not just you—the algorithm is stuck in a feedback loop. It prioritizes "safe" bets based on your recent saves and watch time, creating a repetitive echo chamber.
To fix it fast:
Reset:
Go to Settings > Content Preferences > Reset suggested content to wipe your history.
Signal: Use the "Not Interested" button on repetitive posts.
Engage: Search for and "Like" three totally new topics to force a shift.
It’s basically a digital "reset" button for your brain.

Instagram showing you the same types of content means that you have are already WATCHING the same types of content. The algorithm serves you what you watch the most so it isn't repetitive; your interests are repetitive.

on one of my accounts, i get alot of snow sports content because I interacted with a few posts if that's what you mean.

it shows what you interact with. If i watch a full reel of a certain type of niche, i will always get another one from that niche in my fourth or fifth scroll.

Just click on not interested, and that type of content will disappear
