Removing google penalty by redirection

Have any of you tried to remove a google penalty by 301 redirecting the penalized site to another domain that you own, that is essentially to become your old site? If so, how did it go? And would you recommend doing a google webmasters site move as well?

I just read at google webmaster forums that someone did that and for 7 days got his old traffic from google back but then got hit by a penalty again.. But I suppose if you had made some fixes to your site, you might not get repenalized like he did.

Should work, if you could pass on penalties from 301's, everyone would be doing it to their competition. I just dont like 301s as the SEO affects dont seem to last long without blasting the 301 with links constantly.

Yup, tested and done a case study on it below. As mentioned, works for 7 days.

But there must be a difference between 301's to an established site (competitor's) vs. a new site (yours)..

Anyway, I guess I won't by trying this based on the 7 day result..

I tried this and it seemed to work. I escaped the penalty for two full months, not 7 days.

Until now. The penalty just went back into effect. I can't figure out if it got transferred through the 301 redirect or if it's a new penalty from trying to hide content with Javascript: bit.ly/sYluyU

Penality can never pass. It is always specific , think about it , if you put a 301 to facebook or cnn or anything do you really believe they will get a hit for this ?

If that was the case penalised sites would be sold like gold and 301 to competators.

Tip : Always use simple logics first before jumping to conclusions.

Penalty passes if the content is same after 301 redirect.

Penalty's do not pass through but they reoccur if you don't fix the problems.

- If you have a content penalty and you 301 to the same content you'll eventually get hit with the same penalty. If you fix up your content you will usually escape the penalty.

- If you have a link building penalty it will hit the new 301'd site because you're just passing the same penalized link juice. So you're not penalizing the new site you're just using link juice thats penalized. So lets say you 301 a penalized page to a page thats already ranking for the same term, it won't penalize it but it also won't help it much because you're passing penalized link juice.

- Panda penalized sites will usually come back through a 301 but make sure you fix the content so you don't just penalize the new domain.

301 is also a great way to figure out what sort of penalty you have. If you 301 a site and it comes back for a few days and then gets re-penalized its usually a content penalty. If the 301 site is dead in the mud pretty much right after the 301 its usually a link building penalty. Ive used 301's to fix many penalties. Once you learn how they work it becomes a great tool to diagnose the problem and escape it.

+1 to this. If you don't fix the problems, then redirection will be pointless in the long-run as you'll just end up being penalized again.
