Hey,

I got a backlink from news site and my rankings dropped every day for the last 2 weeks.

It has a good metrics and the article ranks well, but when I check the website it’s mostly crypto / gambling articles and it seems spammy.

If I remove the article, would it effect my site?

You can disavow the link in GSC.
But I have to admit that it sounds very odd that a single link makes so much damage.

Its good to remove them , as the update had caused to much for this month , so get new links and disavow them possible

Can I just get the article removed?
Can't tell you, never done that.

But disavowing a link says "I have no idea where this link came from, it isn't mine", while removing the article says "You got me"...

You can disavow the link. Before building links, it is necessary to check it's quality.

Are you sure? haven't built any other links in the past? In this case, you need to double-check the links again and find out what caused the ranking drop, or else simply remove the link and wait some time until Google recrawls it.

If it's spam & the keywords were going down after adding this link then disavow the link. Check all your backlinks, on page & update your article. You can target more long tail keywords & add more high quality articles. Build more high quality links like Guest posts, Niche edits, Relevant PBN links etc.

Your website has been penalized for other reasons, more likely because of bad content. Websites are not penalized for one bad link. Disavowing will not help.
