Remove published content, wait a bit, post it somewhere else? Duplicate?

Hey!

I got a friend who published a huge article in a non optimal way for SEO.

Would it work to remove it, wait a bit then split it up into pieces and republish it somewhere else? Will G still think its duplicate since the original document was already indexed or will it work? Im assuming it would work but I just wanna confirm before I advice him.

Will G still think its duplicate

yes

This being said, it's not uncommon for google to rank duplicate content, but no one knows anymore whether that content will rank better than the already indexed piece, or not. (S)he needs to test this himself / herself

This is what I would do:

1. Remove content
2. Redirect that URL to a suitable destination
3. Indexing request in search console to the existing URL
4. Then post elsewhere once the 'last crawl' date is updated in search console

I've no idea I that is right but it seems logical to me :)
