I am new to the site, and this is my first post.
On reddit, I saw a guy describe a process using Google's Remove Outdated Content tool to un-index his competitor's entire website while they were down during an upgrade. They didn't notice or resubmit their site for indexing, and their organic performance has fallen off a cliff in the year since. If Google sees a 404 on a link submitted and it doesn't come back up for 48 hours, they remove it.
