From my perspective, relevance has become one of the strongest signals. A highly relevant page or link often performs better than something with higher authority but weak topical alignment.

Search engines seem to understand context much better now, so matching user intent and topic relevance can make a noticeable difference.

Absolutely, relevance usually comes first. A high-DR link won’t help much if it’s completely unrelated to your niche.

Topical similarity and contextual relevance carry more weight, so a lower-DR site in the exact niche often performs better. Authority matters, but only when it’s relevant.
 
I always prioritize relevance first. A link from a smaller, niche-specific site looks way more natural to the algorithm than a random high-authority placement. It definitely helps with topical authority much faster. :)
 
Totally agree. No matter how strong your backlinks or domain authority, if your content isn’t relevant to what people are searching for, it won’t rank well.
 
The same goes for internal linking.

All your most related pages should be linking together in-content. It is far less beneficial to link internally from unrelated pages.

I usually choose websites that have similar content and good traffic rather than websites with high metrics but unrelated content.
 
Topical relevance usually comes first for me, because a link from a closely related niche often sends a stronger and more natural signal than pure authority alone.
 
I always put relevance first. Authority helps, but without a clear topical match the signal feels weak. The links that stick through updates are usually the ones closest to the niche.

what about you, mate? You always keep giving us these basic one-topic tips, but you never mention how you go about doing them...

Do you use these tips in all of your niches and sites, do you make exceptions (if yes, when?)... How about you stop blasting 1 post per day like clockwork and actually participate in the discussions you create for a change?

Besides content relevance, you also need to consider the quality of the website. Websites with good or consistently stable traffic over a long period usually provide higher-quality backlinks.
