I'm trying to do SEO for a local website so I've been reading through all of the great ideas the forum has to offer. There's a lot of great strategies being offered here I'm wondering which would be the best for me to apply.

So the question is this what strategies will work better for local SEO and what strategies work better on a bigger scale??????

There is really only one strategy. Backlinks and content.

And you need to focus on local keywords.

Don't be afraid to focus on keywords that have smaller searches especially for a new site or client.

If you can get them on the first page for any keyword, they will feel very encouraged.

If your keywords cause the google map box to pop up I wouldn't spend too much time on the getting backlinks for the site. You're better off SEOing the map listing. I've tested several local business websites compared to map listings and the visitors to the website were so minimal that I don't even bother ranking them anymore.

The only time I would change that is if you are targeting keywords that don't cause the map box to come up. Then it's just a matter of using a keyword rich domain with the city, add some geo targeted meta tags, make sure that the business address is on all the pages, and put up some unique content.

Then you just need some backlinks. Ranking a local SEO'd site isn't hard usually. Most people are lazy and don't really do much.

    Maps is where it's at.

Thanks for the advice, I had not tought of putting the adress on every page and my keywords dont make the box pop up FYI. One good thing is that they have a keyword rich domain with the city included.
Here is my plan for the site.....Please let me know if I'm going to do something foolish or that you wouldn't do

    1) Get articles written in order to get a lot more content on the site
    2) 1,000 Directory submissions
3)100 Spoke Link Wheel.... I know there is some debate over the effectiveness of the links wheel but I will mostly use it to spam the shit out of it with scrapebox
    4) 500 Bookmarks made to the Link wheel
    5) Scrapebox 10,000 links to the Link wheel

Let me know what you think.

You need to setup a google maps account and the use the methods in cash maps you will find the course on BHW.

For local organic results optimisation, get local directory submission and link partners from your country and niche. Backlinks should be target from different c-class ip's from your country.

Use alexa.com to find good link partners from your country.

Local SEO- Local Search terms are usually much easier to achieve. Articles, Press Releases, and Local Directories usually do the trick.

you're going to have to use more keywords with smaller search volume, sometimes under 100, but the good news is its usually very easy to get on the first page, and that will make the client feel confident in your service. however, its all about ROI and conversion rate if selling online. Your keywords are also going be longer tailed than normal.

I've also noticed that local search results are much, much quicker. It's because there's not much volume, and because of that you have less competition.

Just target good, converting keywords for both local AND global. Then build links at the same pace and you will rank quickly for local, yet still be climbing for global. This is a good long term strategy. Just consistent backlinks and content.
