Registering a .us domain from outside the US - is it possible?

Hey all,

I'm looking to pick up a .us domain in a couple of weeks but have seen that there are some restrictions on who can register a .us name - not being from the US I'm just wondering whether anyone here (not from the US) has successfully registered one before?

I've checked the restrictions (obviously) and you need to be able to meet one of three requirements - two of which I clearly don't meet (as I'm not resident in the US, nor is my business incorporated there) - it's the third one that appears a little more likely but it's not really very clear - the wording is:

"An entity or organization (including federal, state, or local government of the United States, or a political subdivision thereof) that has a bona fide presence in the United States"

Not really sure what constitutes a "bona fide presense" so has anyone here registered a .us name before that can offer guidance please?

Well a year ago I managed to register a .us domain name with namecheap and I have never encountered any problem even though I am from Asia. However I do not really encourage people to use .us domain name. The reason is you cannot apply whois guard/protection onto a .us domain name. I consider it as a fatal problem for those who want to use it for black hat purposes.
 
yes possible , i registered one few days ago without any issue

You should be theoretically able to register any domain from any country - Internet domain system is a sort of an international agreement, so if your registrar gives such an option it shouldn't be a problem...
 
yes this is possible. but if you are not us sitizen you may lose your domain in future. e g if this domain is very nice.
 
Yup, entirely possible with any country, us, .ca, etc. If you're really worried, just set up an address in that country or use a friend's to register it.
 
I buy several .us domain in godaddy. It's very easy and no problem at all.
 
Thanks again - suppose I was worried that it may get pulled back off me at a later date so might look into setting up a business address in the US just in case

i have buy one 1 year ago at name.com without problem till now.
 
I`ve have myself some .us domains :) and none care about them
 
well - majority rules in this case then so fuggit, it's a punt anyway so I'll give it a crack and see what happens - thanks all ;)
