    You can get a free domain with any host company pretty much....
    Just need to register for monthly service...

    No, this one is free and I have registered several of them. Just gotta remember to cancel it before the renewal.

    To be honest, I don't trust them to not bill me and me to cancel in time.

    I agree register sucks, but you could always get the name and transfer it to your preferred name provider such as gdaddy or cheap names. You will need to wait 60 days before you can transfer the name.
