If you google register.com and click on their adwords, you can get .com, .net, .org, and others for $0.50

I have never used register.com, what is their renewal fee?

Their regular domain price seem to be $38 yearly and $150 for ten years.

Renewal would cost you much, so better transfer it ~10 days before its expiration.

register it with them, if you really want to, but
uncheck auto renew, and then
push domain to another registrar eg namecheap 1 month before renewal
