Regional SEO. Any input?

Hi!

I am familiar with SEO and backling building for global sites (written in English that is), but I am now doing a JV with a friend where I live (Norway). Any input on how to do backlinking and SEO in general for regional sites? Will the approach be the same? Or would Google consider it unnatural that a website written in Norwgian has backlinks from English sites?

My plan is to do tiered link building, mainly building a few 2.0s as tier 1 (Youtube; Tumblr; Wordpress; Blogger), and use SEnuke Xcr on these.

it is always best to get backlinks from sites from same region / language, but you will also get good rankings and from english sites linking to your site.

yeah im about to start 2 new regional websites and i was asking my self this question is it ok to use the backlinks services provided here in bhw knowing that most of their links comes from english sites

English backlinks will also gives you benefit to your site, It works like a charm!

If you build 10 English Links (easily available) and 1 powerful link from your region (Very difficult to find) then 10 Links will give you better results.

English links can still help. Especially in universal search. Building backlinks from IPs in your own region will help. So will building links ON sites in your region. Also for a nice way to target Norway specifically go into Google Webmaster Tools and set your targeted geography to Norway. I've found that really helps when you're trying to rank specifically in a certain region. Also try to make sure your site is hosted in Norway.

Yes the approach will be the same but if your target audience is in the local region, try focusing on terms that they would use as opposed to terms someone would use on an international level. Keyword + city name or region name is always good.

As far as backlinks, I think it matters less where the links come from and more that the overall profile looks natural. A search engine algorithm isn't designed to say "hey, this site has links from outside the country, its spam!" Web masters and website owners link to sites all over the world. It would make sense however that sites in a particular region may only be linked to sites in the same region with a small percentage of backlinks from other countries. One thing you could do check out the backlink profiles of other similar websites that seem to be ranking well and see how many links are coming in locally and how many are coming in from other countries. This may help paint a better picture of what is acceptable.
