Refollowing to send the notification again?

If you followed someone a long time ago on Instagram (like when Facebook auto followed your friends for you), and you want to tell them that you followed them (ie follow back dude! ), how long do you have to stay unfollowed for, for the notification to go to their phone when you refollow them?
