My main site ranks well for 'blue widget', I also own a different domain: bluewidget.com. Is there any way having this domain could improve the position of my main site (no links bluewidget.com)? Whether that be through pointing links to the EMD, and then redirecting, or anything else?

I have the same question.

I'm thinking that if you can get the EMD to start ranking, even slightly for your keyword them 301 it to your money site there should be some improvement in the serps as any link juice would transfer over.

But just registering then redirecting, I don't think you will get any serp changes.

Would also like to know what others think.

I would also think the same. Just redirecting without any SERPs will mean that search engines will consider it as other domain instead of EMD. So I'd also second the option what Mark has said.

Any one have any experience with this? I was thinking about building some cheap links to this EMD, and then redirecting it to my money site. Any benefit in the EMD itself for this purpose?

For best results put up a micro site on the EMD's, build cheap links, let the domain start ranking a bit and then 301 redirect to money site.
