If I buy some aged/expired domains that have good backlinks pointing to them, and I just use them to place a 301 redirect to my main site, would that boost the SEO of the main site? How significant would be that boost?

It can definitely help just don't rely on it for your entire SEO campaign. You will want a good mix of decent backlinks to go with it.

I prefer to use traffic domains when 301ing as you get SEO benefit and will get some residual traffic as well.

If your website is already ranking for thousands of keywords and you 301 a strong domain (100+ quality RDs at least), then chances are you'll see a boost in rankings and traffic. I prefer to create an acquisition page on the money website and then 301 the aged domain to that page. Within that page, I do internal linking to relevant money pages to pass link juice. The idea of a 301 aged domain to the homepage is good, but it doesn't look natural.
