Why are redirect pages so common?

Why don't websites just render their pages with the affiliate links in them and instead place links to a page on the same website which then redirects to the affiliate link? And this isn't just affiliates, so many websites do it. For example when you place external links on facebook as posts, facebook actually show them as links to some facebook redirect page. Why?

Thanks

theres honestly lots of reasons for it most people just arent aware of those reasons

Most publishers want to protect their traffic. When a sponsor stops paying you just need to change one link inside your redirection script instead of replacing the same affiliate link a hundred times.

It's the same number of times. If I have a page being rendered with the affiliate link on it, it's being rendered from some configuration file. I just have to change it there once.
