Redirect a bought website to a current one, will it help for SEO?

Hi Guys,

Recently we bought a website that operates in the same niche as we do. We will be redirecting this website to our own and that site will just 'go away'. When people type the domain of that site they will arrive at our site, we are both in the same niche (videogames).

We want to use a 301 redirect and redirect the entire domain to our mainpage, in Google Webmasters we will then file a movement that that site is now moved to our own URL.

Will this help us in the SERP's? Since the other site has a fairly good Google ranking overall also.

Yes google transfers SEO value with 301 - also good useful as BH buffer if panda comes after you as you can cancel the redirect.

Good to hear, however alot of those sites links will result in a dead 404 at our site, because we have a way different system and won't be moving their articles. Can this hurt our SEO or not?

Well in you .htaccess file you should be able to specify where you like the old pages redirected to, this can even have a few old pages redirecting to a new pages, i.e olddomain.com/old-article > newdomain.com/some-page.

It's easy enough to do as I've done it myself with success

I think i'll just point their category pages to my ones and all of their articles to my mainpage. I decided to build something that took the keywords out of their url's and look for a similair article on my site, and 301 it to there.
