I think it's random. If you get detected as a bot or risky, they do it

One of the main ideas behind Reddit is to let people to share their stuff in an anonymous way. KYC will be a big no for the regular Hipstie-Doe.

Everyone is implementing KYC as if collecting data is not enough. Another road block for marketers.
