Long story short, my article hit the front page of Reddit! and the site crashed!
Seems my hosting is not capable of handling that amount of traffic.

I am using NameCheap's Value package. And upgrading to professional didn't work either!

Suggest me what should I do? Is hostgator capable of handling good amount of traffic? Or should I go for a VPS?

BTW, its a wordpress site.

shared hosting on cpanel has a thing called concurrent connection limit. find a vps that can scale up and down according to traffic which counts by the hour. you don't wanna blow a monthly budget for a short spike.

There are no wordpress sites on the front three pages of reddit right now. Nice try.

could you suggest me some? and yeah, I am low on budget!

but I know I could drive huge amount of traffic from reddit. 3 / 5 articles I submitted on reddit, made it to first page of the respective sub-reddit and one of them made it to front page...

you know, I could make you look like an idiot in front of whole community. But I won't.

Not that respected mate. Don't worry about it.

There is a WordPress site in the top couple of pages.

Scalable cloud hosting would do the trick. What you would need to work out is whether the traffic you are receiving is worth the scaling cost.
