Recovering From Over Optimized Keyword Ratio

Hi, I accidentally put too many instances of a keyword in an article and now the ranking for that term has gone out of the top 100. I didn't realise I'd used the same alt text for all the images and also in the other usual places.

As soon as I moved the term to the start of the page title the drop occurred. I then removed some of the instances of the keyword but the page hasn't recovered and this was about a month ago.

Is an infraction for keyword stuffing permanent or can it be recovered from when reducing the amount used?

You can try reducing the number of keywords you've used, but you won't have the guarantee that it will recover. Overstuffing is and will always be a no-no.
 
Ok thanks. The page is still ranking for some other keywords it seems so I'm hoping this is a sign it will bounce back. Will slowly send some links and see what happens.
 
It is always recommended 1-2 keywords per post. at least for a 500 word post
 
Out of interest, how many images in the article and what word count was the article length ?

Keyword is mentioned as follows - 1 in H1, 1 in H2, 3 in main body, also article is linked in sidebar so another one there (if that counts?), so 6 in total (density 0.3 currently).

Word count 1100, 3 images and 2 vids. The images had alt text for keyword originally so that would have brought it up to 9...maybe that was too much in google's eyes?

I was bouncing around position 80-90 for easy to rank keyword which is why I added the keyword as alt text. to see if it improved Then I read that you should have the keyword at the front of the title (was towards the end originally). It seems the combination of moving it to the front and having it placed in 8/9 other places was too much.

Will have to wait and see what happens.

Were these 9 all the same keyword, or any variations of it ( ie longtails ) ?
 
Have you built any links yet? I wouldn’t over analyse this too much - I’ve got new sites that move around a lot in position 80-150 - like every time I check they’ve moved +/- 20 spots.

So it could be an external factor at play here.

Make sure your on page is right going forward - keep the exact match as low as possible (in fact keep it as it should be to make the article read well). Make sure you include all relevant longtails and all relevant related keywords. Don’t feel under too much pressure to optimise every element with exact match.

Then just move on to the next stage - building some backlinks; and follow the same ethos there as well.

Yes all the same, a 2 word term. Given the keyword it's hard to do variations of it, also there's not much in the way of long tails either. Hard to explain but it's difficult to use anything other than the keyword as it's written, in the context I'm using.

Just done a few blog comments for now in terms of link building. I would say although I've used it quite a lot it does look and read naturally. I'll just have to see how it goes and update the thread if anything happens.

There is a tool from cognitive seo, and it finds common words across the top 10 results for any given search term, then checks if you are also using them.

So I’m talking about something like that; maybe your keywords have other terms, phrases etc what are commonly mentioned alongside them; not necessarily terms you could rank for, or terms that get any searches, just terms you should include so that google know you’re an authority on your keyword.

And yea, jut keep doing what you’re doing, I don’t think you’ll have any perminant penalty for what you’ve done.
 
if your current word count is 1100, how about you add more content to around 1500-2000 without using the kw again? and then wait see the results
 
What you believe to be the issue may not necessarily be so. Correct your on page and move on.
 
oh come on. even the self claimed seo experts repeat density is dead.
 
See what the destiny for your competitors on the first page is and try to achieve something similar. It usually depends on your niche.
