Recommendations for UK hosts

I have uk hosting with 1and1 in Milton Keynes and it's shite. I have hosting with Hostgator in Texas and it's great. Don't think the geographical location matters as much these days
Your problem might be related to with service provider not with data center. FYI, a lot of hosting companies actually leasing rackspace in data centers owned by companies such as Blue Square DC which is based in Milton Keynes.
In addition, geographical location still has importance in web hosting and UK Data Centers facilities are identical for those who would like to target European regions.

My experience hasnt shown any difference but that's just my experience and I respect your opinion.

Geographical location is important for numerous reasons such as network of the different service providers. For example, if you would have a server in UK or Europe chances are that the server is connected to the various large Internet Exchanges in those countries which could make your website fast to access in those regions.
I know these days latency period is not a big issue, but if you are targeting local market then hosting a website in the same country can be beneficial. However, it will not be a slower if you host it in US or UK.

Ok got you on the faster/slower aspect....so If I wanted to host a site in Australia...you would be pretty certain that a site hosted on oz would get a serp priority over a site hosted in UK/USA ?
IMO no, because when it comes to the SERP; ccTLD domain extension is more important than the location of server.

Go for Hostings House reach by putting the term Hostings House into G, they provide services in UK as well.

Yeah vidahost are great but I'm not sure they offer vps servers preferring shared/reseller and cloud servers instead.
Could be wrong and cba to check as I have 8% battery.
