I want to start collecting subscribers on a few of my sites, but I am reluctant to pay 20-30$ a month until I know I can collect a list of decent subs.

Anyone got a plugin/script they recommend? Ideally with Mailchimp

You don't need any plugin, just use the WordPress contact form

I used ThriveLeads. Easy to set up, easy to create nice pop ups and some nice settings. They are pretty good. Also you can buy a few licenses (if you have more websites) for lifetime without paying monthly. Check it out.

sumo plugin is a good one, with their free plan, you get a email popup + social sharer...

ThriveLeads and Bloom from Elegant Themes will work for you. OptinMonster is good too, but very costly when compared.
