Recommend a shopping cart

thanks all seems a good spread with magento being popular but interested in some of the others as well.

If memory serves was there not a site sometime ago you used to be able to demo cart type platforms against each other on a live system including admin control panel to get a feel for them, given some of the suggestions here I am sure if it is still live a fair few would be on there so I can 'roadtest'

If your mom needs to manage the site herself I would recommend using Wordpress with e-commerce plugins. Other solutions like magento and opencart are better, but a typical newcomer wouldn't be able to manage it the least bit.

Magento is not god for someone who is not technically advanced. Opencart is better

Shopify = expensive poor interface
wordpress = forget about it, really!
prestashop = open source great features good plugins. Prestabox is same but they host it for you 10 euro set up, but poor support.
Magento = Never tried it. Don't like the look of it.

try prestashop, this cms will upgrading your web knowledge a lot since they gives a lot of extra bugs for every release.

I'm using this cms, after everything got fix, this can run stable and you can rely on the system. as long you don't touch it too much.

Prestashop seems to be easier to use than Magento (less complex), free and has a lot of free modules and themes

joomla with virtuemart has proven managable for me, i don't like the not terribly seo friendly urls it makes, and the meta description requires a similar trick to my wordpress one (detailed in a wordpress thread on here somewhere), but once you've found the right file, edited it to create a dynamically generated custom meta description tag, and installed csvi (the .csv product management tool that lets you mass update your product inventory) you end up with a faily good site, that is easy enough to manage that you can just hand the keys over to a not quite so savvy client and not be terribly worried about them breaking it
