Has there been any recent update in the algo as for as how G treats and recognizes profile links?

I haven't noticed a recent one against profiles, as beakon mentioned
this algo update was last spring.
The main difference though is that the update threw out "thin" pages.
Profiles tend to be super thin with little to no original content, or hell,
any content for that matter.
The key is to fill up your profiles with as much content as possible. Make
them appear like a PAGE rather then a thin profile page. You know what I mean?

Google treats profile backlinks as "self=1" links, ie, self promotion. They've done this for quite some time now.
