Received money from an unknown source, can I get scammed?

Recently I have received money from an unknown source coming from a bank from another country than mine.

I never had any job with the country where the money came from.

This account where I have received the money is the one I use to get payments and make payments (although I never used to pay directly with the card, I make the transactions via Paypal).

So pretty much I know I should not spend any money but I'm more worried about the idea of being scammed by someone.

Can these things happen because my account, email or any other information has been compromised or most probably is just a mistake from the bank or the sender?

Anyone has ever faced such a situation before? What would be the best approach?

Banks can make these errors. Also, the person may have put the wrong details in.
I'd personally sit tight and don't spend it. Contact the bank and let them know and just to watch over your account.

Call the bank and explain what happened. That's your best approach. It's not your money, you will have to give it back sooner or later.

I once sent $500 to someone by mistake, never bothered trying to contact him to get it back.... maybe same thing happened here

Trying to call the bank for more than 1 hour I think they are overwhelmed by corona lol

The bank will tell you oh we see but we cannot return it to be source, neither can we give you any more details. Call your legal officer and tell him this he’ll guide you where to park this money in yiur accotinf books

It's happened with my sister in law few months ago and she spent the money and few weeks later the bank said that was mistake and she need to pay it back

Call the bank and talk with them about potential risks and what you should do with it.

Most banks know about scams.

Don't do anything and let the money stay there for a year or two, than spend it

You should check where the money come from. Depend on the country you can get criminalized because of it. (if the money source is from scam, drugs, etc). Best way it to wait 1 year at min. Before consider it safe

If its not your money dnt take it... it may cause some one's job. Who knows. Return it. Or contact the person who sent you the money and let him know yur willingness to refund. You may get a reward as well

I do not understand how you can be scammed if someone sends you money instead of taking your money! I thought scammed means you lost money not gained money!!

It happened to me, I received ~ 500 Euros on my PayPal account (that I never use for anything). It's a long story, but isn't worth the hassle, trust me. Just wait for a month or so.
