Short term this is true. But within the next 10-15 years captchas will be permanently cracked. AI is getting better at a pretty fast rate and it is only a matter of time before it can read obfuscated text just as well as a human being could.Re-Captcha will never be cracked. I bet Google has a million variations just waiting to be released as soon as someone cracks it, just as we saw now.

Recaptcha will probably be completely cracked long before then, but then new captcha services will be out. It will probably be around 10-15 years before there is perfect OCR (as in there is one program that can crack any captcha that could possibly be made or invented that a human could also 'crack').10-15 years? thats a long damn time
That's not true at all because in 10-15 years machines will be able to write unique content at a similar level to a human being, so there all 'white hat' will be automatable. Captcha's would be crucial if only they still worked.in 10 - 15 years there probably be no need for captchas the way internet monitoring is going.

In 10-15 years, there will be no more Google so it doesn't matter.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ QFT
Very likely.
To hold the degree of power they have in a none monopoly for as long as they already have is extraordinary.
No-one thought IBM would ever lose it's grip...or General Motors, or Yahoo/Alta Vista or Myspace and many more.
Microsoft and Google have had extraordinary lengths. Microsoft operates in a near commercial vacuum in the home market (most Linux packs are none comercial)
But the only reason your average every day punter uses Google..is habit. They wouldn't know if Bing results or Yahoo results were better or not 99 times out of 100.
Google are more or less relying on habit. Very few outside IM have any emotional or financial involvement with them - or would care if they changed their name to "Duck's Ass Search Engine" or were replaced by a search engine with any other name or background.
One big development that another company grabs first, one scandal, one accidental slip of user data that gets the rest of the media up in arms, and that could be the end of Google..in the time it takes to change your default browser and home page...20 seconds maybe?
Scritty
Maybe, but maybe not. The company that innovates the most in search will be the leader in search 10-15 years from now. My own personal opinion is that search will eventually be replaced (at least to some degree) by semi-intelligent question answering. As in, instead of searching "payday loan", you ask "what is a payday loan" or "what is a good payday loan service that will give me a $800 loan with this repayment term" and the search engine will not just show you results, but "answer your question" with a couple of results that match exactly what your long query was.In 10-15 years, there will be no more Google so it doesn't matter.
I think we are closer than you think. The issue is that 'captcha solvers' are usually small man shops. I guarantee you if a behemoth like Google or Amazon or Facebook wanted to tackle OCR they would have it broken within 5 years.no, it will be much longer than 10-15 years.
AI theory had been researched for a long time now, there is no fundamental improvement yet. The theory is still the same as several decades ago. The improvement we see is simply because we have more powerful machine available now.
but the problem is: the improvement in hardware is not enough to solve the complex problems.
just like IBM, their super machine can win human chess master, but, it still has a long long way to go to win a human GO master (in case you do not know what GO is, search GO chess).
