Mainly intended for dropshippers, ecommerce owners and sellers of online services in general.

There are two models of payment processors in ecommerce.

1) Start now: Model practiced by Shopify Payments, PayPal, Stripe...it's quite tempting, you create an account, send a picture of your driver's license, register your bank, your phone/email and five minutes later you can already start selling and processing payments. It sounds perfect because in a few minutes you are already ready to start making money. But don't be fooled: someday you will need to go through a review and possibly your money will be held for months.

In the beginning, your sales are all approved, and you are making a few hundred dollars, your payment processor takes the fee for each transaction, and everyone is happy.

It is very common that after a few sales, before your first payout, payment processors like Stripe and PayPal ask for documents, proof of address, proof of inventory, tracking codes, social media links and a lot of additional documents. Meanwhile, your money is still stuck and depending on the approval of a review that should have already been done.

Conclusion: if your documents are rejected, your business will be considered high-risk and you will be told that the business model you practice is not compatible with PayPal/Stripe/etc. policies. Your money will be held for months and your cash flow will go to shit. And don't be deceived, this is VERY common, especially for those who do dropshipping or sell digital products.

2) We will analyze your business first:
that sounds boring, you create an account with the payment processor and it initially asks you for a ton of personal/business documents and makes it clear that this will need to be approved (it will take up to 3 business days in most cases) before you can process a sale.

After approving your documents, the processor will still need to approve your website, your business model, etc. However, trust me, it is worth it.

Although annoying and more time consuming, this payment processor model wants to get to know the customer BEFORE collecting payment fees from customers who will be rejected in the future. If you are rejected, you have no loss, your money is not withheld, you have not spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on ads previously.

If you are accepted, your payment processor will be much more loyal and reliable, they already know who you are, what your website is and how your business works. And they have accepted you. You will hardly have any problems with these payment processors in the short term. Your biggest problem will be disputes/chargebacks that will take weeks to start appearing and you will probably have a better chance of being heard.

Conclusion: it is better to spend a few weeks talking to a payment processor, even pay a set-up fee, and actually be APPROVED than to be in a hurry and be ''accepted'' without being able to make the payout and have your money locked for months.

I'm facing the exact issue right now. Stripe banned my account saying it's high risk.
But as a non us resident you cannot use authorize.net and 2checkout processing fee is too high. I wonder if there are any other good payment processes that support non-us residents.

Wise words and totally agreed. Tl;dr; get in touch with the payment processor and ask for a review first. Also be sure to go through the accepted usage policy for like 100 times.

With that, i’d recommend collecting user info like the ip, browser fingerprint when showing the payment form. Should help in communicating with the payment processor if something goes wrong. you will be able supply more proof in those cases and show that the payment was not fraud etc.

I would recommend checking Paymentwall/FasterPay or Ocean Payment.

2 - It's called KYC - Know Your Customer.
But you're wrong, 2 is not better than 1, and you can have exactly the same issues with both. Option 2 can also freeze your money, or close your account without any questions, or keep sending the same stupid questions again and again before unfreezing it.

There is option 3, companies that do compliance and everything for you, but they involve monthly costs that much higher than 1 & 2.

It is possible, in the end, the 2 methods need to go through KYC at some point. But passing as soon as possible decreases the chances of having money frozen, so you are already immediately rejected and don't lose time and money for a few days as is case 1.

I wish this was true, but unfortunately, there is no guarantee that it won't suddenly change. Telling from personal experience.
You can pass KYC and everything is good but some time after your account is frozen with $100k+ and you submit endless KYC questionnaires, answer stupid questions again and again etc. There is no guarantee.

Out of those three any companies you've worked with? Because just searched for reviews and they all seem to be pretty bad.

Also tried to contact Oceanpayment they don't even seem to understand English. Emailed them and haven't received any response for the past two days.

Another option is to use "high risk" merchant payment processors. The only thing is that they are bigger scammers than even PayPal.
"High risk" merchant payment processors will easily welcome you aboard, with wine & champagne. You will start receiving payouts. Then, one bright sunny day when a juicy chunky amount is due for payout, they will freeze your funds. When you ask them why ? Then they will show you very smartly, which of their policy you violated and then they will steal your money. You can do absolutely nothing, as they are all licensed.

I personally have worked with Paymentwall/FasterPay and had good experience. Ocean Payment is from Hong Kong, I think.

If you want other options, just search for ''shopify payment gateways + your country name'' and a list of Shopify compatible options will appear.

Yes, in the end, all these payment processors have their own policies that allow them to unilaterally terminate the partnership and freeze your money for months.

Thanks for the valuable post. I got banned once by local payment processor and it was total nightmare.

I use stripe for almost 2 years and zero problem, I receive payments 1 business day later, for me the worst and the real garbage is paypal, I stole more than 3 thousand dollars, they are rats and also I was permanently blocked

In my experience they were not strict. I don't know if they accept Vietnamese. And as far as I know, FasterPay/Paymentwall allows individual accounts, but there are fewer features or some restrictions. OceanPayment will probably ask for a company, but I'm not sure...I recommend you contact them. Maybe Payssion (another chinese company) is also a good idea, but is for local payments, not for credit cards, and the fees/payout times are longer than normal.
