re-writing content?

Hello, my name is Dave, 33 years old from the UK. I just want to say that this forum is great, and thanks to everyone who shares their knowledge on here. I am just about to dip my toe into the water of the niche website world, and already have a niche planned out. I have been researching as much as I can on the keyword and on niche site building for about the last month, and feel ready to give it a go.

My niche is a specific health issue, and I had a question regarding the content - I will be outsourcing some article writing, but in terms of describing the actual condition, would it be a problem to copy something from wikipedia? Or would it better to read that, and just try and put it in my own words. This is purely for the factual stuff like describing the condition and the symptoms and treatment, etc. So, is it a definite no-no to copy from somewhere like wikipedia? Or should all the content on my site be original?

All the content on your site should be original and SEO optimized.
 
You can cite SOME information, but a majority of the content would best be served original.. what you writing content for anyway? What's your strategy?

As the other members have mentioned, it is best to come up with original content. For the most part you want to do this because if a search engine crawls your page and sees that it already has large blocks of text just like yours in its index (from Wikipedia) then it may just ignore the pages and not index them.

I suppose its debatable though as to how much content would have to be copied before that would happen. You also want to be careful about copyright infringement. I doubt that would be an issue with taking things from Wikipedia but you never know.

It would be best to write the articles in your own words. You can use Wikipedia to have some idea about the topic you will be writing just make sure you write the articles in your own words. Copying contents will only hurt your site in the future. Uniqueness and well written content is what makes a website really great.
 
As people mentioned above, you can quote some of the stuff from other authority blogs or websites but you need to make sure that most of your content is original and SEO optimized. Since the better the content and backlinks, the more better you rank in the search engines.
 
really appreciate the feedback guys. I took a look at some article spinner, just out of interest, and how the heck does anyone get any good results from them. The output was completely incoherent.
 
Again as others mentioned, it's probably decided on a percentage basis. If the majority of the page is simply a quote and the rest of your content looks like a caption, that won't work.

If you are quoting a few lines from Wikipedia but still have a bulk share of content, I'd probably italicize it and put an immediate hyperlink underneath with "Source: Wikipedia" as it's an authority site and in not competition to your sales pitch. I'd only speculate by saying this, but I'd think Google could differentiate a random link from a reputable reference if not on the anchor text and domain alone. You could make it target a new tab in hopes to not lose visitors immediately if that were a concern.

If you're wanting to copy and paste the majority for you content, spinning wouldn't be the way to go IMO. It takes time to make it intelligible and is in my opinion for quantity of "unique" posts.
 
As others have said, always use original content for your own site. As for spun content, I only use it for article sites and web 2.0s but NEVER on my money site unless the copy is readable and coherant.
 
What is all this trash replies.

Citing Wikipedia's description of the health symptoms and treatment =/= duplicate content unless 100% of your article is from Wikipedia.

at OP: Yes, you can cite information from Wikipedia but just make it at max 1/10 of your whole article.
 
Wikipedia cite information from other sites. Visit those sites, read the original articles at least two or three times to obtain a very good understanding of the subject and [FONT=&quot]then rewrite it completely in your own words.[/FONT]
 
try to write unique content for your site, of course you can quote from time to time some info from authority sites
 
yes, agreed that re-writing seems to be the way to go. It'll be like being back at school!!

You never want to have duplicate content. Ideally, All of it should be original. Having said that, when I am pressed for time, I will spin content manually(changing phrasing, using synonyms, etc...).
 
ok if you plan that you are going to outsource then please hire such people with good feedback they take higher price but give good service.
 
If your site is a quality site, and most of the content is original, you are not going to have a problem with duplicate content in this situation. The duplicate content penalty does not really apply across domains, except to low quality sites, and it certainly inst going to apply if you are describing the known facts of a disease or condition on a site that is about that health issue.

If you build a quality site, you should use a description of th condition from a reputable medical site, and it will do you more SEO good to actually give them credit for the information, and put a dofoll** link on your site to the page you are quoting.

People go nuts over the "duplicate penalty" thing, but it really doesn't affect a site unless most of the content on the sit is copied or the site is of very poor quality.

The "duplicate penalty" across domains is a myth.
 
I have a quality health site. I go through like at least 7-10 sources including research publications for a single 500-700 word article. You can always quote some conclusion that is mentioned in a research, but other than that you need to write everything in your language.

I write articles in multiple sittings; first I just write using different sources not caring much about originality. Then I go through the written stuff again two times and make changes so it comes out as completely original.
