RAR vs ZIP ?

Hey, I'm wondering what converts better: RAR or ZIP? (especially in US). What's your experience?
 
Define better?

.zip is more common, compatible with most systems and people know it.

.rar has a better compression, but is less common.

So I would say if you want as many people to download your stuff go for zip, if you aim for small file size choose rar.
 
I used to use only .rar in the beginning but then many files started getting corrupted w.o reason and would not extract no matter what recovery option I did. I lost some important files back then and since then I have only used .zip and haven't gotten a single corrupted file up to date.
 
I mean which format converts better in PPD
 
You should have greater success with the more readily recognized .zip format as opposed to the proprietary WinRAR format. However, .rar files offer many other options that zip files do not including password protection, smaller filesizes, etc... but on a strict download to download comparison, I'd expect more "conversions" using .zip.

Why don't you test both?

You can use trackers or even google analytics to see which one converts the best for YOUR audience.
 
I don't mind both as I have WinRar, but .zip would be my answer simply because it's more universal and generally doesn't require 3rd party software to be installed to extract the file :)

I would suggest .zip to the op. In terms of corruption, I've heard similar stories about rar files, so I prefer zip, BUT, if the file is really important, use rar because it has a neat feature where you can add a recovery record, of 1%, 2%, whatever, which makes the file more recoverable in the event of data loss.
