I find it incredible that requesting links from actual people is considered "spam".... Basically google has gone 100% arbitrary now...they don't like your face, they manually demote your site....cuz the other lyrics sites are spamming just fine thank you very much.

Seems like they really only looked into RG. I bet big G wants to maybe replace them with something of their own.

RG probably didn't buy adwords....or something like that. Google lets amazon, tripadvisor, ebay, about.com simply spam the world away and then they crack down on some rap lyrics site? Randomly, just like that, because they asked for links in exchange for some shit?

It's 100% arbitrary... "we banned you because fuck you"....

Guys, you got it all wrong.

a blogger called John Marbach started a story,. story ended up at TechCrunch (and pretty much all big sites). At that moment Google had to go down on Rap Gen cause it was all over the net, but Google didn't told them to try to disavow bad links and to wait for a couple of weeks/months before they decide what they will do.

No, they sat down with them to sort things out in a couple of days. Why? Here is why. Rap Gen is backed by Andressen Horowitz. And who/what is Andressen Horowitz?

It is a multi-billion VC firm that have their hands in Facebook, Pinterest, Skype.....the list goes on, you can http://a16z.com/portfolio/

So, don't cry over Rap Gen, they will be just fine :)

I thought Google main job was to provide quality search results for their users. If I'm a frequent rap genius visitor and today I wanted to visit their site to look up the lyrics to a new song, where do I go now? Bing? Rap genius visitors give zero f**ks about their SEO strategy. Google is making to many enemies by playing the role of GOD of the internet. Maybe after younger internet users start labeling Bing as the "Cool" way to search and Google stock price begin to drop, they will probably wake up.

Hey, just so you know there's a difference between "requesting links" and "exchanging links for something of value"--one is not frowned upon by Google, the other will get your ass whooped.

It doesn't really matter who started it. Rap G are in pages 5 to 7 of queries result, that's awful. Maybe their big shot backer can get them the kind of connection juice to line their ass so their investments don't end up in the waters, but the damage has been done. However, if this story is half-incredible, then Rap G sure had enough backing to blow their mouths to the smithereens with their previous PR stunts.

Hey man, don't hate on Big G, the smartest criminals are those that don't get caught. It's all about not getting butt-alyzed by Google, as we would be simply ignorant to assume the big names always play fair. One rule tho' is to be subtle, and from what I know Rap G didn't tow the line with that rule.

Yeah, well, my site that had 3 links in total (2 being no-follow), no BH seo whatsoever, was penalized by Google for buying links??....is TechCrunch gonna write about my site? Why would I care about Rap Gen being on a page 5-7?

Hey just so you know you're in the wrong forum. Go back to shitmasterworld.

Maybe you shouldn't, but you went through the trouble to bring up the "Andressen Horowitz" angle to this discussion (I probably would have missed out on that if you hadn't brought it up). And to answer your question, media don't snoop around for stories unless there's some weight to it (not that I want to annoy you).

Wow, that's the first blast I get in BHW, from a three-thousand post established member. I'd do us a favor and don't turn this into a shitstorm, I only was trying to be definite, but you obviously have a temper. Good luck ramming everyone who don't say things you like.

RG was being way too blatant about it. Most lyrics sites just hide the backlinking code in the text when you copy and paste the lyrics onto another site.
