This is a complete noob question as I'm not really that familiar with SEO:

So I was just wondering what could be wrong with my site or what I might be doing wrong if it's No. 2 in google when searched for ''keyword'' (with"") but I can't find it nowhere when searching just keyword. Could someone please kindly explain why is it like that?

Thanks!

Yes - "your keyword like this" will limit the search to that exact "string" of words.

Without the "" .. it is those words or some of those words in any order

Thanks!

So basically, the problem is I've got enough backlinks to rank good for exact "string" of words but not enough to rank for plain keyword?

It's not only about the backlinks. Your site is good enough, overall, to rank for "keyword", but not for keyword. This could mean that your on-page SEO is lacking, your domain name is too young, you don't have an EMD and so on. As for backlinks, it could mean that you have shitty ones that haven't been indexed, you have a poor anchor text in the backlinks, you have no authority backlinks and yes, you don't have enough of them.

Again, it could be any single one of the above factors, or a combination of several. You should always see to it that your on-page SEO is up to par, so look there to begin with. If that part is OK THEN you can move on to off-page factors.

when you search with quotes, your entire keyword inside quotes should be in the exact order to show up in results. But when you search without quotes, the words can be in any order.

For example, if you search for small kitties and dogs & "small kitties and cats" you may get different results due to the exact match.

Great answer thanks, but I'd say my on-site SEO is pretty good. I just dont really have that many backlinks. I wasnt wondering why I'm not ranking without quotes I was more wondering what makes it rank that well with them.

how old is your domain? When you create a new domain it can take a while before it starts ranking well. Just keep adding content and backlinks and your website will rise in rankings
