rankings dropped over night

Can anyone explain what's going on?

site was ranking #4 for a competitive keyword

I was targetting 3 keywords with 3 separate pages, so the homepage was targetting one keyword, an inner page was targetting another keyword, and another inner page was targetting another keyword

For the past year, my rankings were consistently like this:

keyword 1: homepage sitting at #4
keyword 2: inner page sitting at #1 or #2 depending on the day
keyword 3: the other inner page sitting at #3

2 weeks ago I built some high quality (I think?) backlinks to the homepage only.

last night something strange happened. keywords 2 and 3 disappeared from page one and they are now in the middle of page 2.

so my rankings are like this:

keyword 1: homepage still sitting at #4
keyword 2: inner page went to page 2
keyword 3: the other inner page went to page 2

WTF?

Give it a few days to a week, then you can start to make assumptions.

KW Dance its not a bad thing alwatys, 2 days ago i was at #5-#4 and i droped to 10# and now dancing on 8-10#. So i guess they are doing something

I know about google dance, but this doesn't seem to be a dance.
I built links to the homepage only. You would think the homepage would be moving around. but no, the homepage is stuck where it was before at #4. The 2 inner pages went down. WTF?
And it seems to be specific to my site only. The SERPS have not changed other than that. Hopefully I have not been manually reviewed otherwise I am F8cked.

How sure are you that the links you build were high quality and how many links did you build all at once?

Also, is your site in Google WMT? if they penalized you, they will let you know why in a few days.

Edit - read your post a little closer, just a dance or google's algorithm decided to change you ranks. Maybe your inner pages need some links pointed at them as well?

It is a normal drop, untill you get 1st page ranking don't build links, just upload quality contents, you will get your previous ranking for sure

looks normal, if you drop to page 5-6 on all keywords you should be worried!

I'm curious - what do you mean by "High quality links" ?

If there hasn't been any activity in terms of links for that long, a dance is expected for sure!

happened to one of mine too. i wonder of it has anything to do with the google update?
