Searched for "los angeles dui attorney" analyzed the top organic site.

Good looking site with good on-page, good content, and tons of pages. Then I looked at the off-page stuff. It's tactics from 3 years ago, somehow this site slipped by penguin - backlinks are not relevant, not authorative, a lot of exact anchors, weak social signals.

Then a few more results below is the ......lawyernow.com site - even worst - everything you shouldn't do.

How are these sites even ranking so well? What factors am I missing?

You are missing the fact that you can hide almost every link with .htacces (or some plugins). So you most likely can't see the whole backlink profile.

They are probably using some PBN's to rank them.

Not sure they're using PBN's, if they are they're hiding it very well. I can usually uncover hidden PBN's pretty fast. Most of the links I've found are Sape type contextuals.

3 years old eh? Maybe go a little further back. Sure sounds like Russian behavior to me. I'd peg it on a combination of xrumer, and very clever 301 usage and cloaking. But, of course I am not an SEO. So I'm really just guessing.

You cannot hide any links with .htaccess. You can attempt to block various backlinking service spiders but that doesn't do much.

How much money are you making with SEO and how many sites have you got with several page 1's?

I would guess none, and the extent of your knowledge is from reading forums and guides.

In which case, what you're missing is experience and knowledge of how to really rank sites.

Social.. signals..... please :)

What is "authoritative"? You certainly don't get penalized for not having relevant authoritative backlinks. It'll certainly pass more juice if you have a contextual from a relevant page, but it's not required.

And his exact anchors are no more than 7%

off-page SEO hasn't really changed much in 10 years.

You have to be more careful with anchors now, and non-contextual links don't work as well as they once did, but it still comes down to backlinks. All this crap about social signals is just stuff people write about because you could write an SEO master guide in 5000 words, then there'd be nothing else left to say, so people need to over-complicate it in order to sell services, get blog visitors and sell courses.

I have several sites on page one actually and do make a nice amount of money monthly. The problem is I can't get any consistency in rankings so I analyze and tests all the time. Obviously you didn't look close enough at these sites to say the exact anchors are less than 7% or you're analyzing the wrong site.

Well. Looking at your posts it looks like you get a lot of SEO services. That would be why you don't get consistency.

You're not in control of anything with services, and most of them are crap compared to what you can achieve if you actually build your own networks and use tools.

There's a big big difference between having your own powerful private network, building manual web 2's that you boost up with gsa/fcs, and buying a bunch of services on bhw.
