Hello all.

long time reader here. I feel as if I grew up with a lot of you but just never talked to you. Well I am looking to rank a website in Japan. Besides the typical hosting in Japan, JP TLD etc etc. What else can I do to rank in Japan?

Cheers.

Well I will do it in whatever language I have to do it in to rank better. I am assuming I would have to convert it to Japanese.

Don't try rank on language you not speak .. I ave tried before and allows fail .
for me it just waste of time .

All standard SEO practices apply to any other regional tld but from what I know, the google algorithms are not as strict as they're for Google.com so you can expect to easily getaway with a greyhat strategy.

Featuring a video review by Jackie Chan is optional but you can setup a pre-launch campaign by giving away incense sticks as freebie.

I'll add that you should try to look Japanese as well. The Japanese much prefer to do business with other Japanese people rather than foreigners. Because of this your site will need to be written by a native Japanese speaker, and any payment gateways or the like will need to be Japanese as well. Basically if you don't appear to be a Japanese company (or individual) your efforts will be wasted.

Well the site I am trying to rank gets a lot of Japanese traffic which is why I got the idea to rank a jp site as a buffer site or a portal to the real site. If I can rank something high in Japan I could probably get more traffic and customers... In theory.

How do you know this? what data or source can you give about that?

So what methods work really well for Japanese sites?

Not sure if you meant me, but I'll answer. I run a travel site about a destination that attracts a very high % of Japanese visitors. (more than india and china, and similar to the US). Going off this I should be having about 10% of my business doing bookings for Japanese, as the figures for india and the states pretty much match the traffic figures I get from there. I get zero business from Japan, even if I have better rankings there. I have tried getting my whole site translated which turned out to be a very expensive waste of time. Even with a Japanese language site my visitors all dropoff at either the payment gateway or contact/about us pages. I have discussed this with many in my industry and all notice the same thing.

All of my sites are targeted at one specific country and by far the most effective thing is having the country included in some of the anchors and have at least a few links from sites that are hosted in Japan and/or the site is about Japan or is directed specifically at a Japanese audience.

I tried using hosting in my country to improve rankings and honestly it did nothing at all. With your incoming links it matters, but with your site it doesn't seem to make a difference. Not for me anyway.

Also, your on-page seo should make it blatantly clear that your site is directed at a Japanese audience.

i tired to rank a chines language site and failed to rank beacause it wasn't my language rank only those site how are on your language normaly in english

Has to be in Japanese and look Japanese. I would suggest you partner with someone in japan. Must be mobile friendly.

see the thing is 70% of my customers come from Japan. I dont think I need to look the look in order to win them over. Im not asking how to get customer acquisition im talking about ranking.

just like any other country - register a local site (.co.jp), host it in japan and get lots of.co.jp links. I found ranking in japan easier than any other country I've targeted, sold fuck all though!

Great thanks.. I know basic 101 steps guys. I am looking for specific details that only pertain to Japan.

Here is my idea.. What do you guys think.

I will create 20+ web 2.0 properties but create them all in Japanese, link them to my money site. Then build some PBN to the web2.0 properties.

Thoughts?

I have similar problem. I'm trying to rank Chinese keywords on Google. I wonder if there is any non-English keyword tool for this kind of job? I'v been reading BHSEO that we can build some solid tier 1 websites/pages and post paid manually written 1000+words articles on these sites, which are backlinked by many tier 2,3 keyword spam to build link juice. Would it still be a feasible solution? And is it working on non-English content building?
