Ranking videos with low retention views

Have any of you guys managed to rank a video using low retention views by getting a good amount of comments and likes? I always thought views would be the bigger priority but I've seen videos rank with low retention views cause the likes, comments n subscribers are good just wondered if it's maybe a low competition niche or if this is a typical thing?
