I have a few very successful websites on the go right now, but they are all large projects that I'm familiar with doing seo for. My friend wants me to make him a site specifically for the purpose of ranking for one very specific, very easy keyword to rank for with virtually nobody else interested in ranking for this keyword.

While some of you might think I'm a retard for making a thread about this, I don't want to overkill this project and/or spend any unnecessary time/money on it if I don't have to. Large projects are something I tackle with a complex strategy, but this is so simple I'm not sure of the best way to handle it.

Will an EMD (6 words) and basic on-page do it? Or are EMDs not even working for long tails anymore? Will I need some solid links to make it happen or can I just throw a few links at an EMD site with a few pages of text and rank first?

I wouldn't go for such a long EMD, i think the best play for you to rank it locally is very little online SEO (onsite of course and a few mentions on social media) and do an offline seo campaign (get people in that area search for the keyword): distribute some flyers with a google search design

    example:

edit: it didn't occur to me, you could save up money and time if you just share this image on social media instead of printing it

From what I've seen, EMDs still work pretty good in Bing/Yahoo with very little effort, just basic on-page SEO (maybe 1000 or so words) and that's that. Still may take a week or so to come up on the first page, but if your friend is going for a kw phrase that has very little competition, it should be pretty quick.

Big G on the other hand might be a bit more of a challenge (when isn't it?). Still, I have EMDs ranking there as well.

    Flyers? What in the world?

The guy said the keyword was easy. All he has to do is plug it in to GSA and it will rank #1 in less than 2 weeks (if he knows how to use GSA).

    I wouldn't buy a EMD but a shorter PMD.

    Home Page:
I will bet on EMD. Create 2-5 high quality and very closely relevant links using the domain/page as anchor (about $15). Than blast some links on these 2-5 links and you are #1 for very long time in most cases. Of course needs on-page SEO and sometime this is enough. I know very hard for ranking local niches with less than 10 monthly searches, so be sure, that the competition is low.

Sorry to sound ignorant but what is GSA? And yes I was thinking a PMD might be better, thank you.

Thanks man that was helpful. Still can't decide if I should do an EMD or PMD though.

If it is a very low comp local KW a few directory listings and local blog comment would do the trick. I have done it myself. I do not understand why your friend want to rank for a KW no one searches for... portfolio?

Ok thanks. People do search for the keyword in question, but nobody would put any effort into trying to rank for it because the topic involves a legal grey area. My friend has a business in this "grey area" and although there are only about 60 searches per month, each visitor would be potentially quite valuable.

GSA is "GSA Search Enginer Ranker". Probably the best backlinking program I know of. I put GSA on a dedicated server that way I can get around 3-5 million links a day. And I can't possibly explain how easy it is to rank local keywords with GSA. I will set up a few hundred geotargeted campaigns at a time, and within 2-4 weeks I can get 80-90% of those keywords ranking #1 on Google.

That's the only real way to get traffic from those long tail local keywords. You have to target and rank for hundreds of them.

If this is a local business, why don't you get a DBA and treat it as such. Do the onpage and 200 ciations, and you will own the niche there, plus there will not be any linking penalties in the future.

I've seen alot of GSA use for Australian local SEO, Break are you just targetting localised links from any particular pr level? or just everything

I am testing a long EMD - On Google we show for very few niche _ location based keywords.
On Yahoo, its hit or miss.... A few months ago we were ranking on 1st page for pretty much
Keyword + Location.... On Bing we were ranking on the 1st page for exact phrases but not we are
in the 3rd page or so... We did not do any optimization or link building just Social Shares + SBM's and good
    content.
