If I register a domain name with the exact keyword I wanna rank for, does that guarantee it will rank #1 on google with the right optimization for that keyword? Or does it really not make so much of a difference?

Looking forward to all your thoughts on this.

That would be called an EMD (exact match domain) these were ranking werry well a couple of years ago, they still have some value but not as much as in the past.
So in "short" nope, ur not guaranteed to rank, actually nothing can guarantee rankings and the only ones "guaranteeing" just want to sell u somethin :P

So would you say that in regards to ranking the domain name has no impact at all?

There are many more factors to consider, competition being the biggest.

.

OP, there?s no clear cut answer

EMD?s still help with rankings, but they aren?t a guarantee that you will rank #1

In the niches that I play it?s possible to obtain page 2/3 rankings but you still need incoming links to get to page 1

I think they help some. But you can get into overoptimization really easy. They don't have the impact they once did but I still buy them when I find them.
