Would you agree that ranking simply because you have a good website is not really realistic?

Unless you have tens of thousands of dollars to throw around I don't see how you would randomly get natural links thrown at you.

Maybe some social shares but Google doesn't officially use that to rank websites. Seems it would take a big budget to pull this off. Also I think even some press releases can get natural links but they may end up being more no follow than follow links anyway with that which Google also doesn't officially rank sites with.

Cheers

You could rank terms with no comp without links, but that's about it

Yes I agree.

Why would you need tens of thousands of dollars to throw when you can right an attention-grabbing article that most webmasters would want to link to?

Social shares are not officially used but user behavior from this kind of traffic source are used by G.

Google itself doesn't really expect webmasters to start doing white hat SEO all of a sudden. All SEO's are blackhat. Some are doing it smartly and some don't

You can rank for a keyword without a single link if it is extremely branded, or it has no searches, or it is something unique that hasn't been used by anyone else.
Actually, SEO jargon are the key that makes us to think that SEO is so difficult and you need hundred thousand dollar for it. All you need is "time" at least one hour a day, good typing speed (40 words per minute with thinking about a topic will be good) and knowledge of creating email, also the knowledge of using VPN software. After this if you have created your facebook account and filled all the required details and shared something with your friends. You can do SEO on your own pretty easily ( off-page), and learn more from this forum about jargon like niche, impressions, back link, generic keyword, branded keyword and all. But, if you don't have time - " time is money" and you will have to replace time with the money and pay it to an SEO expert.
