Ranking locally and worldwide question

Hello,
Is there any difference in ranking my site locally and worldwide because I have a domain name with .com.uk .com.us for example.
Is it easier to rank locally? And when a local search, would a .com.uk (their locality) come in priority rather than a .com domain?

Some of the major differences in ranking locally as opposed to ranking nationally or internationally would be the TLD (as you already mentioned), using localized keyword terms (i.e. dog walking UK as opposed to just dog walking) and submitting information or a website to local directories or listings sites such as Google Places. To rank locally, target localized keyword terms. If you are trying to rank better in a different locality (such as in another country) buying a country specific TLD would definitely help things move along because search engines tend to show localized results when possible.
