Ranking internal pages over homepage?

Hi there,

I'd love your input as the SEO strategy below still confuses me a little.

I specialise in building WordPress websites. However, search volumes for keywords involving WordPress MY_LOCATION are 0-10/mth. On the other hand, the search volume for Web Design MY_LOCATION is roughly 1300/mth.

Ideally, I'd love to rank top 3 for the WordPress search term but as its search volume is quite low, I'm wondering whether I should aim to rank an internal page like domain.com/wordpress-mylocation instead of my homepage, and try to rank my homepage for the Web Design search term.

OR, should I try to rank my homepage for the WordPress term, and create an internal page to rank for the Web Design search term?

In your experience, what would be the best approach to hit the top three for WordPress and Web Design MY_LOCATION?

Well do you have a GMB listing? Does your domain name have wordpress or web design on it?

Yeah, I have a GMB Listing. Both it and my Domain are just my companies name. They don't contain web design or WordPress.

then do this:

domain.com/your-location/web-design = rank this for web design and use this as your website on GMB listing
domain.com/your-location/wordpress = rank this for wordpress

build links for both pages, but more for the web design page. GMB is really important to rank local these days.

In regards to location, why should this be used as a subdirectory rather than part of the slug? e.g. domain.com/location/wordpress vs domain.com/wordpress-location

domain.com/location/wordpress vs domain.com/wordpress-location

this format contains duplicate kws in the url. not good
