Ranking in China?

I wrote an article two days ago. The article in a sense does have some relevance to China, but has in no way been designed to cater towards China, nor is there any Chinese language in the entire writing. I'm pretty puzzled by this, there was nothing but a minor section of the entire article, that had any direct mention of the country. The section made up like 2-4% of the article in total, although the keyword does have some relevance to the Chinese people.

It appears as if, I am genuinely ranking for some keywords on the Chinese version of Google? If anyone can provide some perspective for this, I'd appreciate it

It’s possible your article is picking up traffic due to the relevance of the keywords to Chinese users, even if the focus isn’t on China. Google’s algorithm often ranks content based on intent and keyword associations. You might want to check if your article is linked or shared on Chinese forums or platforms, as that could also drive traffic.

Since the article is so new, I don't know how to do so. Google Search Console doesn't offer much data, nor does SEMRush etc. My site is perhaps 2 weeks old at this point

It's pretty normal to have a small percentage of international traffic, as well as being exposed in other SEs,
In your case, your website/page is most probably ranking for some keywords in Baidu, there's no harm in that

Have you checked your traffic stats to see if the visitors are actually engaging with it, like spending time on the page or clicking through?

I'm on the the basic plan of Wordpress, which doesn't offer much insight. I can see clicks from my complete audience, but not from China specifically. I was a bit curious, if someone was trying to make my site appear illegitimate

If you really want to rank, try obtaining a "webmaster tools" for Baidu, and index your site in Baidu. You'll get more traffic.

Really interesting suggestion! It seems I'd have to buy a Chinese phone number to do this. Do you have experience doing this yourself? I wonder why I have never heard of this before, seems like lot of traffic left on the table by not submitting to Google's competitors

Your article ranking in the Chinese version of Google might be due to:

  1. Keyword Relevance: Even minor mentions can rank if competition is low.
  2. Global Indexing: Google may detect relevance across regions.
  3. Backlinks: Links from global or Chinese-influenced sites can boost ranking.
  4. Search Demand: Chinese users searching related terms might surface your article.
What to Do:

  • Check traffic sources and keywords in Google Analytics.
  • Analyze backlinks using Ahrefs.
  • Add hreflang tags to target specific regions.
  • Consider creating more content for Chinese audiences if it aligns with your goals.

There are so many chinese people, that it isn't surprise that a few of them are searching terms in English

The keyword baidu is ranking because it has some meaning for Chinese people. This is normal and expected from Google.

If you want to build organic traffic from Chinese internet users, you must ensure that your SEO strategy is aligned with the regulations and needs of the local audiences.
