Ranking Forums

Hello all, I was wondering what's peoples experience in ranking forums VS sites ? I realise that with a site you have nice content on your homepage, and until now that is how I have ranked all my sites. But I am looking at trying t rank a site with about 50k a month term plus some smaller terms surrounding it. Being the homepage of the forum will be the forum, is it even possible to rank for selected keywords as most of the ranking power will come from off site?

I've seen forums rank in the MMO niche all the time. As long as there is content, you can rank just about anything.
