There seems to be so many web development/design companies. What's the best way to rank for them? Using the less obvious keyword/phrases?

Local Google Business is the Best way to rank for them. You can rank easily for your local city, and country.

Where I come from every small business thinks putting up a free FB fan page is their "web site". GAWD. :dontknow: Then they wonder why it doesn't do them any good. But they just don't want to (or maybe can't afford to) spend the money.

it really depends on the city and your competitors - but overall "web dev" sites thrive on homepage/sitewide links from client sites.

But its not good practice to you use less obvious keyword, you have to use perfect keyword.
