Ranking for "Search Engine Opimization"

So I'm try to rank for SEO locally in my town. I read a few times around here that you shouldn't target the keyword SEO because you are then competing with search engines. How should I go about ranking for "SEO in my town" and "my town SEO"

The same way you would for any other key term, build a site, add content and backlinks over time. I don't understand why it would be any different?

Yeah, I understand that part. My confusion started when some people on the board were making fun of others were for trying to rank for "SEO". This led to me questioning my efforts.

It'll be easier to rank for the term on a local scale, though. Which is perfect for what you're going for.

On site optimization is the key factor to rank for local keywords. Don't use only the exact "seo in your town" as anchor, try to use vast amount of related search terms as anchor.

Don't just keep it to your town, add neighboring towns as well. Get some press releases done with local papers, link to/from them.

local keywords is easy to rank when compared to global.. so try with local and be sure that u have enough potential..

Yeah town I'm using is more of a county, so it would include many towns. Definitely sticking to local for now.
