Ranking for harder keywords

Ive made a couple of niche affilate sites now and managed to get them all onto the first page of their keyword search pages and make my first few sales. But ive decided I want to try and go for harder keywords with alot more daily traffic for a test to see if its possible.

Anyway I really don't mind putting in alot of work to get my sites to rank high as it will payoff when they eventually do. But is this really possible or should I just stay with lower search volume keywords and just keep making more sites?

In regards to go for more competitive keywords read what I wrote in another thread...

Hi, guys thanks for the advice, I think I will go for it $10 for a domain is nothing really.

As for the sites that are ranking on the first page currently, some of them are pretty aged sites (not gonna beat them im guessing) but some of them are articles and 2 are videos from youtube and dailymotion. I know beating youtube its self isnt possible but but it should be possible to knock a videos page off right?

Also would you suggest I pay for say 1000/2000 backlinks as a basis then try and find some high pr backlinks relating to my niche?
