Ranking for ecommerce stores

Hi, I'm currently building an ecom store,

Just wondering do people care about long-winded articles for ranking ecoms? all the top search results just lead to product category pages, which can obviously give you a huge KW density if your KW is in the title of every listing.

I'm pretty sure google knows when people search for a product to buy, they want category pages and not articles full of fluff, what do you think?

No need of articles in ecom, Only thing matters is powerful links to your root domain and category pages.

Thank you for your input, do you believe bigger categories with more choice helps?

Do you think its easy to outrank larger stores like Debenhams (big UK chain) ect if they have 0 links to the ranking page but obviously huge links to the root

Forget about outranking big ecom sites category pages.

Quite agree with him. Been doing ecom for many years now and I've noticed most of the competitors with higher position on google have much more powerful backlink. But most of the tops are not from homepage but from categories or specific product page. They ranked it via product names or categories so they established well by having the first page position in couple of their product; long tail keyword

here is screen shot of the comp, some big chain stores, but they don't target this category, they have 0 or little backlinks, can I overcome these ecom big boys if I get some backlinks to my category page?
