I am looking to rank for a short tail keyword (2 words long), up till now I have target 3+ word, long tail words. Should I target a low competition short tail keyword? Why is this a bad a idea.

Why would it be a bad idea, its all about going for low competition keywords regardless of the number of words.

I have found that dominating long tail keywords helps me take a stronger position on short tail keywords that are similar. Not only is this a quick win and drives more qualified traffic through long tail, the LSI kw approach can be impacted from the footprint. Not sure if that is 100% for anyone else, but in several niches I took this approach and it helped.

Think about the keywords that will drive more qualified traffic IMO. If your keywords are saturated, then you will have lower ROI. Hope that helps.

may I know for which website you are talking? Short tail keywords are generally very competitive, you are telling that you have already targeted 3 words keywords. But have you achieved ranking for this? If yes , now you can also target two words but you have to very much known about the competition.

Go for all related phrases, most searches come through a range of long tails as opposed to specific two word keywords.
