Ok So i have a website that I've never marketed since I was in the process of building up my site. About 2 years ago it was ranked about 4.5 million on Alexa naturally. 2 years later, yesterday, it was at 11.9 million. 3-4 days ago I did a couple of guest blogs on related blogs...however in the past 48 hours(I didn't sleep) I just had an urge to market it. I've posted several guest posts on .edu blogs, I've made a Google+(added about 200 people in the related field) and put in all the information I've needed to put in, I've also made a Pinterest and posted about 10 different Pins with relevant keyword targeting in mind across 3 different boards...I've even wrote a 550 word blog with 2 pictures and proper anchor text....................Well 3 hours ago I look on Alexa and my new ranking is 16.8 million..................dafuk?? ..was it my aggressive spontaneous marketing or?

I realize it's useless from reading other posts, I was just worried it reflected some violation I might've committed or something from aggressively marketing from outta nowhere.

My question is why in the world are you worried about what your alexa ranking is?

I don't think so that you consider the alexa ranking is the most important think in the marketing rather than going for the positive strategies ..

The only metric I am interested in is how much money a website is making per day/week/month. Anything else is just IM masturbation.

"How much money a website is making" depends on the owner of a website.

What do you mean? On the owner's skills? or expectations? In anycase, that is still the only metric I am happy or worried about fluctuating.. I don't care about traffic, if I get 1 000 000 page views of fake botted traffic that makes me $2 adsense, its useless compared to 200 page views of targetted traffic where I am selling high value, high profit items or services.

Alexa is an unreliable metric. Ranks, traffic and money earned are baselines to follow.

Don't get to radical on your site. If it's been sitting around for years, the last thing you want to do is blow it up with links. By creating a Google + profile for it, you've already alerted Google to the fact you are now marketing it. A sudden rush of backlinks may do more harm then good.

I've never known the Alexa rank of any of the sites I've owned.

Here's the problem though. Several keywords have also lost their position, some have gained but most have went down several spots...
I'm thinking one of my competitors hired some1 to give me bullshit backlinks that'll hurt my ranking. I did no SEM before and my site has been going down slope recently(could be because of the google updates). However recently it's been REALLY bad. I have 50k bing backlinks and I haven't done a single marketing effort(before 4 days ago)besides 4 blogs 2 years ago. Is 50k backlinks on bing normal for a site with no SEM efforts? Also according to the SEOMOZ bar my page authority for store page is still 17, as it was, however for my main page, it went down to 0.....I don't know, maybe it's too soon but just by judging from analyzing stats it seems as if I took a hit from something other than google updates and my efforts have had a negative effect if anything.

That's what I was looking for, thank you. I'm sure I've came too fast with too much.

Usually, you'll see a drop in Alexa rankings if you post articles that have distant relevance to your own niche. Try writing posts that are highly relevant to your niche, and you'll start moving up on Alexa once again.

This is from my own experience. Hope it helps.

Thanks.

You are talking of Alexa rank in millions even 16.5, I assume you may hardly be getting around 10 to 20 visitors..

Well, I personally don't use Alexa, if you want to track how many visitors you are getting per day, install Google Analytics and that's it!
